Teaching the Big Picture

Teaching Children the Gospel is a blog posting that sums up how I (and my church) feel about how we teach children the Bible. It's quite a good explanation, so I'll let you read it for yourself :-)

The Jesus Storybook Bible is "required reading" for all our children ministry leaders. We feel it's important for all our teachers and helpers to learn to unveil/reveal Jesus in every lesson we teach.

This book helped to form the backbone of our children church syllabus — although we did have to flesh out some parts and fill in some gaps ourselves. But nevertheless, it's a good start for churches who are seeking to develop Christ-centered children programmes that go beyond moral lessons.

In 2010, my church brought our children through the books of Genesis, Exodus, Joshua, Judges, Ruth and 1 Samuel, teaching them to see Jesus in every story — the Passover Lamb, the Bread of Life, the Rock,
the Scarlet Cord, the ultimate Judge, the Kinsman Redeemer, the King who gives etc. We also covered some of the sermon topics from our adult service, such as the New Covenant, the life of Joseph, grace and Galatians.

This year, we will be focusing on the life of Jesus, His miracles and parables.

Personally, as I help in preparing these lesson, it's been an exciting ride so far learning to read the Scriptures with fresh eyes each week. I hope to be able to compile the lessons we've done over the past year soon at Growing Kids in Grace ... so stay tuned :-)
